What is VO2Max?
VO2Max is one the strongest markers of current health status and predictors of longevity. Simply put, the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume and use during strenuous/maximal activity.
A Cardiopulmmoary Exercise Test (CPET) measures your VO2Max by analyzing the intergrative responses between the cardiovascular, pulmonary and musculoskeletal systems.
It is a comprehensive 75-90 minute assessment that includes:
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) to understand overall lung function and capacity.
Then an 8-12 Minute Graded Exercise Test is administered on a treadmill which measures breath-by-breath, the amount of oxygen consumed and cardbon dioxide expelled, as well as respiratory frequency and minute ventilation (the volume of air consumed across a minute).
Also recorded during the test are heart rhythms via an Electrocardiogram (ECG), Blood Pressure, and Blood Oxygen Saturation.
All of this data is then interpreted to provide an in-depth look at your overall health, to provide your VO2Max, Respiratory Thresholds, Target Heart Rate Zones, Fat & Carbohydrate Utilization and even identify abnormal reponses that could be predictors of increased cardio/pulmonary/metabolic risk factors.
